I believe there are people who are a cut above, capable of a discipline that is beyond the reach of other people who are also quite disciplined in their own right. I respect these people, who to me make it look easy to be “naturally thin,” and readily concede the sincerity of their devotion.
These people mean business. You may have seen them jogging along roadsides long before the sun is up. They are at gyms and on treadmills hours before most of us have slapped the snooze button for the first time. They are the first to answer the call of morning and begin the labor of health and fitness. Clearly, most people do not commit at this level. Even the hour that arguably marks the onset of morning is negotiable. Six a.m. can be the time that sparks physical ignition or the time that is just way too early.
But there is also another, more relaxed way that favors an approach that is free of sweat and tears. Here are a few examples of creative morning start-ups that are used by naturally thin people.
Naturally Thin Starts in the Morning
People who are “naturally thin” have their own morning agendas that might raise questions about whether or not such agendas actually promote thinness. The difference between cause and correlation is what separates fact from fiction. What can be comfortably stated is that naturally thin people have unique good habits in the morning that seem to be useful.
Naturally thin people make the most of morning sunlight. A Northwestern University study found that moderately bright morning light lowers BMI more than exposure to light later in the day. Lack of sunlight can alter metabolism and cause weight gain. Twenty to thirty minutes of morning light can effect BMI.
Naturally thin people exercise before breakfast. Researchers have found that exercise before breakfast makes the body burn more fat for energy instead of relying on carbohydrates from food.
Naturally thin people eat high protein breakfasts. They double the standard 10-15 grams of protein at breakfast. Researchers have found that women who ate a breakfast that had 30 grams of protein had about 100 fewer calories at lunch.
Naturally thin people use a tall, thin glass when drinking apple juice or orange juice. Those who use short thin glasses drink about 20 to 30 percent more juice and thus consume more calories and sugar. People tend to gauge the volume of liquids more by height than by width, even if the amount is the same.
Naturally thin people flavor the bottom of food to reduce weight gain. They butter the bottom of toast and salt the bottom of potato rounds. Flavor then hits the tongue quickly and is tasted more. This means that only half as much salt or butter is needed.
Finally, naturally thin people put aside a few minutes each day for meditation. A couple of minutes meditation can increase the mindfulness that helps lead to smart choices across the day. Those who showed lower levels of mindfulness on the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale were 34% more likely to be obese.
